Last Wednesday we headed out of town with 2 other couples for a 5 day trip at the Little Sahara State Park in Oklahoma. With 3 campers and a trailer full of four wheelers we were quite the convoy driving down the interstate. We really weren't sure how long it would take to get there since we knew we would have to stop for gas and for the kids to stretch their legs but finally 7 hours later around 8:30pm we pulled into the park. And I have to add the little ones did better than I could have ever imagined on the trip. I expected lots of crying and whining but thank goodness they were excellent!
For those of you that don't know, which I didn't before we went, the Little Sahara is located about an hour west of Enid Oklahoma in the middle of NOWHERE about 3 miles from the small town of Waynoka! You actually feel like you are driving in Arizona or New Mexico with the way the mountains look and all the red dirt around but as soon as you pull into the state park there is sand everywhere! The area is totally geared towards ATV riding. You can actually take about a 15 minute ride through the dunes and wind up on the streets of Waynoka. They have certain streets marked in the town that 4-wheelers and dune buggies can ride down. They want you to come and eat meals at the restaurants.
When we pulled in we decided to get the campers set up in their spots and get the 4 wheelers unloaded. Since it was the middle of the week we pretty much had our choice of whereever we wanted. The camp sites are just sand slots one after the other but they do have electric and water hookup at each site. We were right next to a play park for the kids so that was good. As it got dark the first night the guys all went out for a night ride. When Dusty came back he was itching to take me out and look at the dunes so we headed out. Wow, that was a scary ride. You are on sand in the dark and you can't see where you are going till you are there. I begged him not to take me up or down any dunes because they looked so big in the dark but come to find out the next morning when we went out those were nothing. If you went out on the far side of the park there were dunes twice as high as the tallest trees around. It was unbelievable! The rest of the week consisted of a lot of eating, riding, visiting and some down time in the campers during the heat of the day. It was a lot of fun taking Cadyn out on his 4 wheeler to ride. He loved it. He seemed to get braver and braver everyday and by the last day Dusty had him going down a pretty big dune.
I will have to admit I wasn't too sure about taking this trip and I didn't know if it was going to be much fun but in the end I am so glad we went. We had a blast! We definately would like to go back again but maybe during a time of the year when it is not so hot!
I had to post my pictures in 2 different slide shows below because it would not let me do them all in one. Enjoy!
